QQI Level 3 Climate Justice Module

Last December in Japan, for the first time in recorded history there was no snow on Mount Fuji. Already in the first weeks of 2025 there have been uncontrollable wildfires in California, a ferocious storm in Ireland, and never before seen snowstorms in the Gulf of Mexico. The ice sheet in Greenland is melting rapidly, and entire lakes and rivers have dried up across Europe.

The future of our planet is under threat, and climate change is the biggest issue that humanity faces this century. To reflect this crisis, The City of Dublin ETB developed a Climate Justice Education Strategy to deliver climate justice education programmes across many subjects, to increase awareness of the climate crisis, and help students identify potential solutions and take action at a local level.

As a result, In September 2024, Youthreach NGGS launched a pilot Module - QQI Level 3 Climate Justice - which is compulsory for all our students. This Module allows our students to engage with the causes and consequences of climate change and to figure out sustainable alternatives.

Our Digital Photography teacher Donal Talbot volunteered to teach this crucial new Module, and the results have been very encouraging so far. YRNGGS students say their awareness of climate justice issues has increased thanks to the Module, and that they are more likely to take action in their community to address climate change.

Climate Justice really matters to our students because it will directly impact their future and well-being. Some of the topics covered in the Climate Justice Module are:

Fairness and Equity

Climate Activism and Global Movements

Health Concerns

National and Global Responsibility
